This Gastown hotspot is owned by a former Canuck. Need we say more? In this land where winter sports reign supreme, a player turned proprietor is a beckoning invitation to sample the savory and sweet at this spacious Water Street restaurant. Here, even the crisp white tablecloths gleam.
The Canuck alum, Kirk McLean, and partners Maureen Fleming, Chef Sean Cousins (Ocean 6 Seventeen, Raincity Grill), andBob McCammon have created a space that’s a charcuterie/butcher shop that dresses up as an oyster bar. Did we mention that the oyster bar is “open for all Canuck night games”?…meaning open from 5:30 ’til late.
Their daily Oyster Happy Hour is another signature Vancouver move. It’s served daily from 3:00 until 8:00 pm. All daily oysters are $1.25 each and all premium oysters are $2.50 each. Mains include a healthy selection of seafood, but also generous cuts of meat. All are reasonably priced. From the menu: cioppino fresh fish and shellfish, tomato and fennel broth, grilled focaccia 22~; pan seared arctic char sicilian caponata, roasted fingerling potatoes, basil oil 24~ ; ten ounce rib eye potato gratin, green asparagus, confit cherry tomatoes,
peppercorn demi glace 29~.
Chef Cousins’ menu derives from regional sources, whether it’s butter lettuce from Fraser Valley or his salmon gravlox, which comes highly recommended.
Glass chandeliers and plush red chairs offset the mosaic tiled floors, and while we wouldn’t use the term “cosy” for the space, we would say that the overall atmosphere is warm and inviting… And Gastown “hipsterish.”
There is also a deli on premise. It’s worth adding that the chef excels at butchering his own meats.
